Three ways to spend the night

Where to Stay in Helen, GA

Quick answer

Stay downtown if you want to walk everywhere and skip parking rules; several hotels sit on the river and along Main Street and Edelweiss Strasse. Unicoi State Park's lodge is two miles out on Highway 356. Cabins and rentals in the hills are registered with the city and collect an 8% lodging tax. No city lot allows overnight parking, so park where you sleep.

Downtown, on foot

Staying in the village means you can leave the car once and walk to dinner, the Festhalle and the river. That matters more since 2026: several free city lots now have a two-hour limit, and no city lot allows overnight parking. A downtown room with its own parking solves both.

Hotels and inns line North Main Street, Edelweiss Strasse and the river. The Welcome Center keeps the full lodging directory at helenga.org.

Unicoi State Park

Unicoi State Park & Lodge is at 1788 Highway 356, two miles from town, with a lake and a footpath toward Helen. It suits people who want trails out the door and a short drive into the village for dinner.

A cabin or rental in the hills

Most cabins around Helen are short-term rentals. Inside the city, each one must be registered and name a local contact who answers around the clock and responds within two hours, and the host collects an 8% city lodging tax. A registered, taxed rental is a sign you are dealing with a real host.

Which to choose

  • For Oktoberfest, Christmas or New Year’s Eve: downtown, so you can walk home and leave the car parked.
  • For hiking and the falls: Unicoi, or a cabin out toward GA-356 or GA-348.
  • For a family or a group: a cabin, checked for city registration if it is inside Helen.
