Parking in Downtown Helen, GA (2026 Rules)

Quick answer

Most public parking in downtown Helen is free. The city owns nine lots and charges only at the pay lot by the Davidson Bridge on Edelweiss Strasse, listed at $10. Since May 2026 the free lots at Pete's Park and Riverside Park, and the Narrweg spaces, have a two-hour limit, and no city lot allows overnight parking. Seven private lots set their own prices.

Three kinds of parking

The city’s parking map sorts downtown parking into three kinds: privately owned lots, city pay parking and city free parking. A December 2024 parking study in the city’s records counts sixteen public surface lots in all. Nine belong to the city and seven are privately owned, and every city lot is free except one.

The two-hour limit, new in 2026

On May 19, 2026 the City Commission made the city lots at Pete’s Park (Unicoi Hill Park) and Riverside Park, and the city spaces along Narrweg, two-hour parking, according to the meeting minutes. Enforcement on Tannenweg began in June. Most online guides written before this summer still describe these as all-day free lots.

Two hours is enough for lunch and a walk. It is not enough for tubing, an Oktoberfest evening or a full day of shops. For those, use the city pay lot or a private lot.

The city pay lot

The city’s one paid area is on both sides of Edelweiss Strasse between Chattahoochee Street and the Davidson Bridge, a short walk from both Main Street and the Festhalle. The only price on the city’s website is a line at its EV charging lot: $10.00 parking plus $4.00 per charging session. The page does not say whether the $10 is per day or per entry, and it lists no payment method. If the exact price matters, call City Hall at 706-878-2733.

White County residents and people who work at Helen businesses park free in the two main city lots. The commission confirmed that in May 2026 after briefly changing it.

No overnight parking

Overnight parking is not allowed in any city lot. The commission has said it will allow some leniency at busy times, but not all-day or overnight parking. If you are staying the night, park at your hotel or rental.

Private lots

Private lots fill the west side of Main Street and set their own prices, which the city does not publish. Charging for parking on private land needs a city permit, and in October 2025 the city cited an operator running a pay lot without one. On festival weekends, pay only where a price is posted and the lot looks like a real business.

Festival weekends

The Chamber’s Oktoberfest pages give no parking or shuttle information. The Festhalle sits beside the free lots along Narrweg and Munich Strasse, but the Narrweg spaces are two-hour parking. For an evening at Oktoberfest, the Lighting of the Village or the Christmas Market, arrive early and plan on the pay lot or a private lot. Festival-night parking is also covered in this Helen Oktoberfest parking guide.

Leaving the pay lot, note the turn ban: no left turns from Chattahoochee Street onto North Main Street from 9 AM to 10 PM every day, and none from River Street onto North Main on weekends.

Accessible parking, EV charging, RVs and buses

  • Accessible parking: the city map marks it on the west side of Main Street between Spring Street and Dye Street.
  • EV charging: the city charger is at 1180 Edelweiss Strasse, $4.00 a session plus $10.00 parking.
  • RVs, trailers and buses: no city source publishes where they can park. The Welcome Center lists motorcoach parking for groups; call it at 706-878-2181 before you drive in.

What changes in 2027

From January 1, 2027 the city is leasing part of 492 Chattahoochee Strasse, across the river from City Park, for overflow and event parking. We will add it to the picker once it opens.

Where is parking for Oktoberfest?
